Gabriel Suovanen
Gabriel Suovanen was born in Stockholm, where he began playing the violin at the age of four. He studied singing at the Sibelius Academy in 1993−1994. He graduated from the Stockholm Opera School in 1998. Gabriel Suovanen has won several prizes in distinguished singing competitions a.o. he won the Timo Mustakallio singing competition in 1998 and was given the first Karita Mattila Award in 2000. In 1997−1998 Gabriel Suovanen was appointed 'Soloist of the year' by the Swedish National Radio. His operatic roles include a.o. Papageno, Don Giovanni, Jevgeni Onegin, Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte), Valentin (Faust), Escamillo (Carmen) and Kullervo by Aulis Sallinen. He has made guest appearances in many famous opera houses a.o. at the Helsinki National Opera, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, Komische Oper Berlin and the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie. In addition to his progressing opera career, Suovanen also enjoys performing Lied and concerts. His concert engagements include among others concert performances of Schumann's Genoveva in Helsinki and Gabriel Fauré's Requiem with Vladimir Ashkenazy and Barbara Bonney in San Francisco. He also sang Schubert's Winterreise with Ralf Gothoni. Suovanen has recorded for the BIS and Ondine labels.
