Daniel Schultz

Daniel Schultz is an accomplished Finnish cellist currently based in London. He is currently pursuing his Master of Arts (Performance) at the Royal Academy of Music under the tutelage of Alfredo Piatti, Chair and Professor of Cello and Josephine Knight. Daniel holds a Bachelor’s degree in Soloistic Cello from the Sibelius Academy, where he studied with Professor Martti Rousi, and also completed a minor in classical singing under Olga Heikkilä. His early studies were at the Sibelius Academy Youth Department, where he was mentored by Hannu Kiiski.

Throughout his career, Daniel has achieved recognition in prestigious competitions, including securing third prize at the 2022 Turku Cello Competition, and advancing to the second round of the International Schoenfeld Competition in Harbin, China, in 2023. Daniel placed top 8 in the international Tunbridge Wells competition in 2024. He has also placed 2nd in the Virtuoso & Bel Canto competition in Italy.

He has performed as a soloist with several prominent orchestras, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and most recently with the Sibelius-Academy Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor. He has participated in charity concerts, solo recitals, and notable festivals such as Cellofest 2023. Additionally, Daniel is a passionate chamber musician. Since moving to London, he has co-founded the prize winning Karelia String Quartet (1st Prize – Wolfe Wolfinsohn String Quartet Competition, 2nd Prize – Nina Drucker Haydn String Quartet Competition) and is also a member of the Lisson Piano Trio, performing recitals in venues around London.

Daniel has performed in numerous masterclasses with celebrated musicians, including Ludwig Quandt, Josephine Knight, Andreas Brantelid, Jian Wang, and Helene Lindén. His dedication to both performance and teaching has established him as one of the most promising cellists of his generation. Outside of cello performance, he is an active member of the Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki and he previously sang with the Tapiola Choir.


Daniel currently plays on a Giovanni Battista Gabrielli cello from 1752, provided by the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.
